This past summer, I had the privilege to host The Thyroid Summit – a week long online event- with my friend & colleague, Suzy Cohen, RPh. The Summit featured over 30 thyroid experts, with an online attendance of nearly 100,000 people from 168 countries around the world. For those of you who were unable to attend this event, I encourage you to visit us at: www.thethyroidsummit.com.
Hosting the Thyroid Summit was a unique and humbling experience unlike any other during my 20 years of practicing holistic medicine. What I found most compelling was that The Thyroid Summit created a community that brought out the best in all of you. Hundreds of heartfelt testimonies were shared during that week through Social Media. You showed your support to those who were struggling with their health, and applauded others for their success stories. You even shared educational links, names of support groups, & holistic practitioners. The dialogue and exchange of resources was endless.
The goal of The Thyroid Summit is to educate you about thyroid problems and provide you with the alternatives to conventional care for you to consider. It requires courage to make change and I was impressed by your commitment to taking charge of your own health. You have every reason to be proud of yourself for that.
In regards to working with a health care professional, I made it clear that if your health care professional is relying on lab tests only or not listening to you, then it is time to find a new doc. It is important to ask yourself, ‘What kind of relationship do I have with my current doctor?’ Is it a true partnership where the common goal is to get well? Or, is it more patriarchal- where you are only in a position to do as you are told with no questions asked?’
In some cases, my point of view regarding thyroid health does not align exactly with those of my colleagues. Remember, there are differing opinions on everything. I interviewed 13 doctors for the Summit. I heard 13 different ways to test, treat and follow someone with a thyroid problem. Just like you, we are all still learning from one another. That is the art of medicine.
“I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it……would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues…..” -Leo Tolstoy
Here is to everyone’s good health!
